Crying Child on Birthday

“It’s my party, and I’ll cry if I want to.”

I’ve been giving a lot of thought lately to the effect that social media has on my life. I am guilty of using these outlets more than I probably should. After all, what am I missing out on in reality while I’m in virtual reality? What most worries me is my emotional response to the posts I see on a daily basis. It’s natural to want to post the highlights of our lives. Happy moments are indeed worth sharing. However, when all I see is a highlight reel of someone else’s life it’s easy to fall into a deadly game of comparison; to develop a distorted perspective on what the people around me are experiencing. I am not suggesting we should all just start only posting all of the negative things happening to us. Social media isn’t really the place to air dirty laundry. What I’m saying is I am going to work harder at maintaining a balanced perspective. Things are not always what they seem, and EVERYBODY has problems. The photo above was taken at that little guy’s third birthday party. He had such a good day, even if this photo doesn’t show it. 🙂
