Choosing the Photographer That’s Right for You!

Education

Let’s talk about photographic style and posing techniques. I’ve been wanting to write about this for a while. There’s a lot to say about this topic, so trust me that this is just the tip of the iceberg. This isn’t meant to be advice for photographers. Really I’m writing this post for all of you that want to choose a photographer for your wedding, family, engagement, maternity, newborn, or whatever session that’s a good fit. No, a great fit!

And no, I’m not trying to convince you that I’m that photographer. Maybe I’m not. Here’s why.

There are tons of photographic specialties and styles. When someone says they are a photographer it could mean they shoot wildlife in the Sahara, children’s birthday parties, real estate, commercial products, fine art, or journalistic installments. Like many other fields, there are many types of photography. When looking for a photographer, make sure the portfolio subject matches your need. If you visit a photography website and see a great portfolio of classic cars, that person might not be the best fit to take your vow renewal photos. Consider that photographers have specialties. Now, that doesn’t mean there’s no crossover. Many great portrait photographers are also wonderful wedding and event photographers.

Just look at their work. As photographers, you are our client and our end goal is to satisfy you with the service we provide. I think the most disappointing thing for any photographer is to work really hard to capture images, edit them, and get the final product back to the client, only to find out that client is not happy with them. Nobody wins in that scenario. One way to avoid that is to look at a photographer’s work before booking them. And not just one or two photos. Take time to look through their blog or website to get a sense of their style. If you don’t like their photos from other sessions, chances are you won’t like ones they take for you.

Not sure how to identify different styles? I got your back! In a future post I’ll really explain buzzwords like lifestyle photography, journalistic style, and natural light photographer so you better understand photography styles and techniques.

For now, I’ll leave you with a dose of cute because I cannot resist sharing these photos of my husband and daughter being adorable together. Check back for more on this topic!
